Renowned Bengali film director Arun Roy, known for his critically acclaimed films Hiralal (2021) and Bagh Jatin (2023), has passed away at the age of 56. He died of a severe lung infection in the early hours of Thursday after battling cancer for over a year.
Arun Roy was admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital about a week ago with a lung infection. He was in intensive care and supported by a BiPAP system but his condition deteriorated and he required invasive ventilation. The cancer he had been battling since late 2023 had severely weakened his immune system and his health deteriorated rapidly.
Roy was diagnosed with cancer just before the release of his film Bhaga Jatin during Durga Puja in 2023. Despite the diagnosis, Roy remained focused on his work. He described the film as his meditation and expressed confidence that he would overcome the disease. He underwent several rounds of chemotherapy and though he felt better initially, the disease eventually took a toll on his health.
Roy has been admitted to the ICU for the past few days and was visited by actor Dev, who appeared in Bhaga Jatin, in the hospital. Despite all efforts by the medical team, including chemotherapy and ventilator support, they could not stabilise his condition.
